At nabsta, your safety is our top priority. While we work hard to create a secure platform, it's important to take precautions when meeting people from the internet. Follow these guidelines to have safe and successful transactions.
Meeting In Person
Choose Safe Meeting Locations
- Meet in public places: Coffee shops, shopping centers, and busy parking lots are ideal.
- Police station "Safe Exchange Zones": Many police stations offer designated areas for online transactions with video surveillance.
- Avoid private locations: Never meet at your home or the other person's home for the first transaction.
- Meet during daylight: Schedule meetups during daytime hours when there are more people around.
Bring Someone With You
- Whenever possible, bring a friend or family member to the meetup.
- If you must go alone, tell someone where you're going and when you expect to return.
- Share your live location with a trusted contact during the transaction.
Trust Your Instincts
- If something feels off, don't proceed with the transaction.
- It's okay to cancel or reschedule if you're uncomfortable.
- Watch for red flags like pressure to meet quickly, requests to meet in isolated areas, or reluctance to answer questions.
Payment Safety
Secure Payment Methods
- Cash is king: For local transactions, cash is often the safest option.
- Use trusted payment apps: Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, and Apple Pay offer some buyer/seller protections.
- Avoid wire transfers: Never use wire transfers or gift cards as payment – these are common in scams.
- Don't pay before seeing the item: Always inspect items in person before handing over money.
Avoiding Scams
- Too good to be true: If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
- Overpayment scams: Be wary of buyers who offer to pay more than your asking price.
- Fake payment confirmations: Verify payments in your account before releasing items.
- Shipping scams: Be cautious of requests to ship items, especially with unusual payment arrangements.
Protecting Your Information
Personal Information
- Limit what you share: Don't share your home address, workplace, or daily routine.
- Use in-app messaging: Keep conversations within nabsta rather than sharing personal phone numbers or emails.
- Protect financial info: Never share bank account numbers, Social Security numbers, or credit card details.
Account Security
- Use a strong, unique password for your nabsta account.
- Enable two-factor authentication if available.
- Log out of shared devices.
- Report any suspicious activity immediately.
Buying Safely
Before You Buy
- Research the item: Know the fair market value before making an offer.
- Ask questions: Request additional photos, ask about condition, and clarify any details.
- Check seller reviews: Look at the seller's ratings and feedback from previous transactions.
- Verify authenticity: For branded items, ask for proof of authenticity.
During the Transaction
- Inspect thoroughly: Check the item carefully before paying.
- Test electronics: Make sure electronic items power on and function properly.
- Verify serial numbers: For high-value items, verify serial numbers haven't been reported stolen.
- Get a receipt: For expensive items, ask for a written receipt.
Selling Safely
Creating Listings
- Be honest: Accurately describe your item's condition, including any flaws.
- Use clear photos: Take well-lit photos that show the item from multiple angles.
- Remove personal info: Make sure photos don't reveal your address or other personal details.
- Price fairly: Research comparable items to set a reasonable price.
Communicating with Buyers
- Keep all communication within the nabsta app.
- Be wary of buyers who want to move communication off-platform.
- Don't feel pressured to respond immediately or accept the first offer.
- Trust your judgment about potential buyers.
